Mary Spratt Daly, 88, longtime resident of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully in the loving care of her family in Lewiston, NY, on April 3, 2009. A native of Buttevant, Co. Cork, Ireland, Mary came to the United States in 1937. Traveling alone by train across the country, she married her sweetheart, John F. Daly of Stamford, CT, in Pomona, CA, on September 9, 1943 just before he left to serve with the 17th BPO in Paris, France during WW2. Together for 47 years, John predeceased her in 1990.

A graduate of the then Connecticut School of Practical Nursing, Mary spent several years working as a private duty nurse and later went on to manage the Answering Phone Service also known as Clarks Hill Answering Service for almost 20 years.

Mary’s devotion to many spiritual, civic and cultural activities in Stamford spans over 50 years of service. As a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Stamford, she served as a member of its parish council, Vice-President of the Rosary Society and was a longstanding member of the Catholic Daughters of America and Columbiettes. She served as a Vice-President of the Stamford Women’s Democratic Club, on the Fairfield County Democratic Board, the Southwestern Regional Planning Board and the Executive Board of the American Heart Association. Further memberships included St. Josephs Auxiliary, the Stamford Chapter of the American Red Cross and she was the founder of the Irish Club at St. Camillus Health Care Center.

As a dedicated supporter of Irish American Culture, Mary was instrumental in the success of the General Philip Sheridan Division #2 and Ladies Auxiliary Division #59 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Connecticut. At both the state and local levels, she held the posts of Treasurer, Vice-President and President of the LAOH. Her never ending dedication to all things Irish in her lifetime include promoting cultural activities such as the Stamford Feis and multiple Irish celebrations and events at Stamford’s Hibernian Hall. Although very proud of her Irish heritage, she always referred to America as “The Grandest Country in the World.”

Mary is survived by her devoted daughters and their husbands: Maureen and Alan Schug of Lewiston, NY and Susan and Robert Gustafson of Hamilton, NY; Grandchildren: Julie Schug Perrault of Lewiston, NY, Susan Schug Meitus of Buffalo, NY, Lori Schug Elliot of Scottsdale, AZ, Meredith Schug Phelps of Charlotte, NC, Stephen Schug of Buffalo, NY, Libby Schug of New York, NY, and Michael Schug of Buffalo, NY, Erin Gustafson Donohue of Clifton Park, NY, Meagan Gustafson Wilcox of Clifton Park, NY, and John Gustafson of Albany, NY, and 10 Great-Grandchildren. She leaves behind her brother, John Spratt of Buttevant, Co. Cork, Ireland and sisters-in-law, Mary Daly Aruzza of Stamford, CT, and Mary Spratt of Hudson, NY. “Auntie” Mary was beloved by her many nieces, nephews and cousins in both Ireland and the United States.

Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 from 4:00 �" 8:00 PM.

A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home on Wednesday, April 8 at 10:30 AM and proceed to St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm Street, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
