Nicholas A. Caldarone, Age 85, lifelong Stamford resident, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Stamford Hospital. Born June 28, 1923, he was the son of Joseph and Louise Laruda Caldarone.
He attended Fordham University and earned a degree from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He graduated from Stamford High School, Class of 1941 and has served as Treasurer of the Reunion Committee. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force 390th Bomb Group and was awarded the Air Medal with Six Clusters, a Presidential Citation and Letter of Commendation from the President of the U.S. He completed 35 missions, surviving a midair collision and being shot down twice. Mr. Caldarone retired from the Connecticut Bank and Trust in 1984 where he served as Vice President and Manager of the North Stamford Office for 40 years.
An active member of the community, he served as an usher at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, Treasurer of its Lay Board, Chairman of its Finance Committee, and was active in all church fundraising activities. He also served as Treasurer and on the Board of Directors of the 546th Chapter of the AARP, Treasurer of the North Stamford Business Men's Association, Director and Treasurer of the Visiting Nurse Association, Director and Treasurer of the Fairfield County Chapter of the March of Dimes Annual Drive Fund, Treasurer of the Turn of River Businessman & Taxpayers Association, and Vice Chairman of the United Fund. He was also a founding member of the 390th Bomb Group Museum in Tucson, AZ, a member of the CBT Alumni Club, a member of the American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the North Stamford Lions Club, and a member of SACIA.
Mr. Caldarone adored his family, who meant more to him than anything else in his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Patricia Boccuzzi Caldarone; his children: Patrice Heinzer and Bill Newmark of Newtown, Michelle Caldarone Sobieraj of Oak Park, California and husband David, and Nicholas J. Caldarone of Trumbull and wife Madeline; plus his eight grandchildren: Charlie, Nick and wife Jackie, David, Michael, Brittany, Thomas, Tony, and Vincent; and one great granddaughter, Sara.
He is also survived by his sister, Mary Caldarone Billone of Norwalk and husband James; and brother, James Caldarone of Stamford and wife Mary. He is survived on his wife Patricia's side by brother-in-law, John Boccuzzi; and sister-in-law, Marion Boccuzzi Fiordelisi, both of Stamford, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three brothers: Daniel, Frank and Anthony.
Visiting hours will be held at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 from 4:00 8:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 10:20 AM on Wednesday, October 1 and proceed to St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church in Stamford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Putnam Cemetery, St. Joseph's Mausoleum, in Greenwich.
