Olga Weisz Zalichin, a resident of Stamford for 65 years, died June 1, 2018 at her home
at the age of 91.
She graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx and received her BA from
Hunter College and her MA in Psychology from Columbia University. She completed
the coursework for a PhD at Yeshiva University.
Prior to a long professional career as a psychologist, Mrs. Zalichin worked at a variety
of jobs that provided useful life experiences (and paid the rent). These included stints
packing chocolates for Barton’s Candy, as a clerk in the Personnel Department of the
fabled Abraham and Strauss Department Store, and as a superintendent of a small
apartment building in Brooklyn. For many years, Mrs. Zalichin was head of the
Department of Psychology of the Stamford Public School system, where she also
headed the inter-disciplinary team. She also served as a Clinical Instructor of
Psychiatry at New York Medical College and as a menopause counselor at Yale
University Health Services Clinic. As an active member of the community, Mrs. Zalichin
served on the boards of The Child Guidance Center, Aid for Retarded Children (now ARI
of Connecticut), and Friends of Ferguson Library.
Mrs. Zalichin took great interest in people, and was known for remembering details of
the lives of friends and acquaintances. She was possessed of a prodigious and unusual
vocabulary, and delighted in using odd words for common things. She is survived by
her daughter, Donna Weisz Zalichin, son-in-law Barry Kramer, son Matthew Zalichin,
grandchildren Eli Z. Kramer, Jenny Z. Kramer, and Tseten Zalichin, and great-
granddaughter Ryan Kramer Moran. Her beloved husband of 69 years, Dr. Henry
Zalichin, pre-deceased her.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, June 5 from 4:30 to 6 PM at Edgehill Community, 122
Palmers Hill Rd, Stamford. Funeral services will be private. Contributions in her
memory may be made to Friends of Ferguson Library, designated for the Bookmobile
