Penelope Sentementes of Stamford, beloved wife of Aristotle (Harry) Sentementes for more than 63 years, passed away peacefully at Stamford Hospital on Friday, March 22nd, surrounded by the children and grandchildren whom she cherished and who cherished her.

Penny, 85, was born in Greenwich to George and Jenny (Vlogiares) Poulos, Greek immigrants who settled in Stamford. She was an alumna of Rogers School and Stamford High School, Class of 1946, regularly attending class reunions. She met her husband, a recent Greek immigrant, in 1947 while working at Yale & Towne. Her father invited young Aristotle for Thanksgiving dinner and when Aristotle learned that Penny had used her first paycheck to buy her parents a state-of-the-art radio phonograph rather than something for herself, he said, “I’m going to marry that girl!” They were inseparable ever since. A homemaker while her children were young, Penny returned to the workforce and had a long career at Paper Novelty Co., bringing home Christmas decorations she made that are still used by her family today, and at Pierce Leahy.

Penny loved her Greek heritage and her Greek Orthodox faith. She was the first baby baptized in the original Church of the Archangels on Elm Street, where her father was president of the parish. Her social life, too, centered on the church. She was a member of the choir, the Seniors group and the Ladies Philoptochos Society and a supporter of all the Archangels ministries. She enjoyed the company of her many church friends on trips to the casinos, theatres and other events. Penny also was an enthusiastic fan of Uconn women’s basketball, the Yankees (especially Derek Jeter!) and Greek soap operas. She enjoyed many cruises and trips to Florida and California to visit longtime friends. An Alaskan cruise with all her children and grandchildren was extra special.

More than anything, Penny loved her husband and family. Grandma and Poppy’s house was and still is the center of the universe. Every summer, the family gathered almost daily at their pool for fun and food. Children, grandchildren and friends drop in and out daily to share stories over a meal or snack of feta cheese and Kalamata olives or even to take a nap! Grandma’s face lit up when her family was around and they couldn’t resist teasing her because they knew she would laugh when she finally got the joke. Penny introduced the family to the broccoli casserole that now appears at every holiday event and barbeque. She was always assigned the sausage and peppers and potato salad because no one made them better. Her Greek cooking and baking were always the highlights at these meals.

In addition to her husband, Penny is survived by her son, Alan Sentementes and his wife Debra; daughter Diane Sierpina and her husband Ted; daughter Linda Sentementes and her husband Richard Lang; grandchildren Steven, Daniel (fiancée Despina Triandofilidis) and Jodi Sentementes; Shannon and Amy Sierpina; Nicole Landry (husband Tom) and Caitlin Weinstock and many in-laws and nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents and cherished sister, Tina Meropoulos. Penny will sorely be missed by her closest friends and koumbari, Ann and Gus Ventsias and Freda and Lee Bitzonis, who called or visited her daily for years.
