Ralph Hopkins Atkinson of Stamford, CT died peacefully at The Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home on October 26, 2007. He was 85 years old.
Ralph was born on October 4, 1922 to the late Hattie and Earl Atkinson in Bowling Green, Missouri.
He was a Sargent in the United States Army during WWII where he fought in the Battle of The Bulge and helped to free two concentration camps. After the war he worked at the Louis J. Solomon Furniture Importing Company in New York City, where he later became part-owner.
Ralph was an elder and a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He was a District Deputy Grand Master of the Third Masonic District of Manhattan, a member of the SAR; Empire State Society by descent from Col. Roswell Hopkins, a member of the National Arts Club, and an active volunteer in many organizations including the James Lenox House. He was also an avid golfer.
Ralph will be remembered as a true gentleman, kind, generous and always appreciative.
Ralph is survived by his sister, Iva Atkinson and her children, Peggy Sandels, Penny Sparks, Patty Dickinson, and David Miller; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Atkinson and her children, Christy Wendell, and Ralph Atkinson; and his nieces Susan Pickett and Julie Nixon. He is predeceased by his brother, Norman Atkinson, his nephew, Bruce Atkinson, and his wives: Edith Atkinson and Ruth Atkinson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, November 10, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Bedford Street in Stamford. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10001. The Nicholas F.
