Ralph Anthony �"Poppy Battinelli, 78, died on Thursday May 11, 2006 at Stamford Hospital. Born on March 14, 1928 in Stamford, CT, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Katherine Bruno Battinelli.
He was a graduate of Stamford High School Class of 1946. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served from 1946-1948, and was a Lt. Commander in the Navy League of Stamford during the 1950s -1960s. He toured with his sea cadets throughout the eastern seaboard. Mr. Battinelli always had an interest in woodworking and model-making. These aspirations birthed a 3 ½ year project building a 12 ft. to scale reproduction of the �"Santa Maria, which was on display at the Italian Community Center in Stamford, from which he was also a founding member of. The Santa Maria was constructed of pine wood and woodscrews only, and was launched on July 4, 1976 from Fairfield Beach. The craft took 1st place in the Ringmasters parade in Bridgeport, CT. After retirement, he honed his woodworking skills building model trains, cars and trucks, which were sold at LaBriolas gallery in Stamford. Mr. Battinelli moved back to Stamford after living in Stratford, for 28 years, and loved playing the piano and ukulele with the �"Living Room Players.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Josephine Etta Saul Battinelli; his daughter, Linda Battinelli-Colucci; a son-in-law, Salvatore Colucci; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Katherine and Kimberly Maria Colucci; two brothers, Carl Battinelli, Sr. and his wife Helen, and Pasquale Battinelli and his wife Gloria, all of Stamford. Two sisters, Ursula Rich of Stratford, CT, and Rita Murphy of Ridgefield, CT; a brother-in-law, William Zaccagnino of Naples, FL; his �"second daughter, best friend of Linda, JoAnn Genovese-Julbes, her husband Gus and their son Anthony of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son Ralph; a daughter Catherine; and a sister Ann Battinelli-Zaccagnino.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, at 9:50 AM on Saturday May 13, 2006 and proceed to St. Cecilia RC Church, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM. Interment will then follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday May 12, 2006 from 5:00 8:00 PM.
