Richard W. Haggerty,Jr., 83, of Stamford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 18, 2013. He was born on August 25, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, NY to the late Richard W. and May Mahar Haggerty, Sr.
He started his own business in 1956, R.W Haggerty Pool of Stamford of which he was extremely proud of and was a long time sponsor of Stamford Youth Hockey, North Stamford Little League, Stamford Senior Babe Ruth and many other youth organizations. He also served as VP of 16-18, Babe Ruth Baseball and was a former member of Tamarack Country Club. He played for the Burtenwood Air Force Baseball team while serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War in the European Professional League. He was an outstanding baseball Player for the Stamford Advocate Baseball Team and Stamford High School Championship Teams, played professional baseball for the Cleveland Indians, Boston and Milwaukee Braves and was also an avid fan of professional baseball, football, hockey and college football.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Emily Ruggiero Haggerty of Stamford, his loving children Karen Maki of Stamford, Richard “Mick” Haggerty and his wife Susan of Danbury, Robert “Bobby” Haggerty and his wife Barbara of Stamford, Bonnie Leister and her husband Jeff of Michigan, Roger Haggerty and his wife Kathy of Stamford, his loving grandchildren Bobby, Jr., Lauren, David, Michael, Sean, Jaclyn, Kaitlyn “KC”, Ryan, Shane and Justin Haggerty and Alyssa and Jake Maki. Also surviving is his sister Marion Santo.
Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his sister Jean Wilder.
A funeral procession will be leaving The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on November 21, 2013 at 9:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 403 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford at 10:30 AM. Entombment will follow at St. John’s Mausoleum, Darien. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Building, Memphis, TN 38105.
