Robert Arthur Jewell, 87, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 18th,2011 surrounded by his loving wife of 57 years, Marion Smith Jewell, his family, friends and pastor. He was born November 25, 1923 to the late Florence Candlish Jewell and Stephen Squires Jewell. Bob and Marion were married July 24, 1953.
Bob is survived by his loving nieces, Peggy Muller Burbank and her husband John of Ridgefield, CT; Linda Muller Christians of Wilton, CT; Martha Jewell Guski and her husband John of Smallwood, NY and Elizabeth Jewell of Sidney, NY; loving nephews, David Jewell of San Francisco, CA and Thomas Jewell and his wife Sharon of Winchester, CA.
He is also survived by his loving Grandnephews Corey Christians and his wife Terri of Windsor, CT; Bill Burbank and his wife, Susan of Newtown, CT; Dan Burbank of Ridgefield, CT; Stephen Jewell of Wheat Ridge, CO and Ian Armitage of Ridgefield, CT; loving Great Grandniece, Erin Burbank and Great Grandnephews, James and Aiden Burbank.
Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Jewell Muller; a brother, William Jewell and a niece, Bonnie Jewell Videau.
Bob attended the original Willard School (now the Stamford Historical Society) on the corner of Scofieldtown and High Ridge Roads, then to Burdick and Stamford High Schools.
During World War II Bob worked at Machlett’s Laboratory on the Manhattan Project, a top-secret military project. The work involved making bombsights for the planes, which were going to drop the atomic bomb on Japan.
Bob worked for Connecticut Light & Power Co., the Hartford Electric Light Company and Northeast Utilities. He worked at the Power Plant in the South End of Stamford. He worked in both the electric and gas divisions of HELCO & NU. In the early years he serviced stoves and hot water heaters in residences and roof top commercial furnaces. Bob had a job of changing gas or electric meters and bringing them back to the shop where he did the checking and maintenance.
Bob was a dedicated employee; always willing to help new employees learn the ropes. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 420. He served as a Union Representative. With 37 1/2 years of service Bob retired in 1984. Bob was a “Golden Oldies” Life Member of the Glenbrook Athletic Club and a Life Member of the Elks Club since 1967.
An active member of North Stamford Congregational Church, he served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees and numerous other committees. Bob was a wonderful man. He had a great sense of humor. He loved and cared for his family. He was a true friend, both to his friends at work and his life friends. He loved family get-togethers, playing horseshoes, croquet, badminton and volleyball. He liked to visit friends. He loved and cared for his home and yard.
We enjoyed our trips to Maine, Cape Cod, Nantucket, Washington, DC and especially our 1961 trip to California across the northern route to Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, and from Crescent City down the California coast and back by Grand Canyon and Mesa Verde National Park, CO.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11AM at the North Stamford Congregational Church, 31 Cascade Road, Stamford, CT 06903. The Rev. Avery Manchester will officiate. There will be no calling hours and Interment will be private. Immediately following the service we will go across the street to the Community House to share lunch and memories, to connect and reconnect. The family welcomes you to join us.
