Robert Thomas Kalen, 78, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2009 at Stamford Hospital. Born April 26, 1930 in Greenwich, he was the son of the late Charles Sr. and Rose Thornwaite Kalen.
Robert was a veteran of the US Navy having served in the Korean War. He was a retired mail clerk for Wood Logan. He was also a past employee of E.J. Converse, Color Film Corporation, ACMI, and Whitman & Ransom. Robert enjoyed fishing, word search puzzles, attending his grandsons baseball games (little league, Babe Ruth, TCHS), and watching his two granddaughters synchronized ice skating teams. He was a fan of TCHS girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball and UCONN mens and womens basketball.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Caruso and her husband Frank; and Kathleen Merole and her husband Joseph; a grandson, Thomas J. (T.J.) Caruso; two granddaughters, Kelly E. and Emily G. Merole; and a sister-in-law, Sister Irene Nebus, R.S.M.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Nebus Kalen; two brothers, Charles, Jr. and Richard Kalen; and a sister, Jeannette Kalen DeCarlo.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Tuesday, February 24, from 9:00 10:30 AM. A funeral procession will then leave the funeral home and proceed to Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery.
