Robert E. Kraus, 91, of Stamford passed away peacefully at his home on Monday May 26, 2014. Robert was born May 3, 1923 City Island, NY to the late Louis Joseph and Hilda Tillinghast Kraus.
He graduated from Fordham University and obtained his Masters from CCNY. He served in the US Army Air Force during WW II from 1942-1945; where he was a mechanic, a tail gunner and a flight instructor. He also served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1950-1952; where he served in the artillery unit as a platoon leader, training his battalion. After serving his country, Robert took courses for Doctoral Psychology. His teaching career started in Pound Ridge, NY as a primary school teacher, then went onto the Bedford School District. He then was a school Psychologist in the Larchmont School system and a Principal at the Mamaroneck Avenue School, where he also started a special education program. From 1980 to 1996, he was a religious education director with his wife Betty at St. Mary’s RC Church of Stamford. He served on the Stamford Republican Town Committee and went on to the Personnel Board. His direction in life was to educate the next generation that honesty, pride and self respect, love of God and family is what life is all about. He was born at home on Long Island Sound, at the end of City Island, NY. He worked for Pan Am, when airplanes landed on the water and would pilot the planes to dock. He was athletic and played many sports. Golf, tennis and boating was his relaxation, where he spent many hours with his closest family and co-workers. He was the godfather of family and close friends and took that seriously to heart. He loved all of them and treasured the gift of fatherhood.
Robert is survived by his two sons, Michael J. Kraus of Stamford and Timothy P. Kraus and his wife Karen McKinney of Bedford Hills, NY.
Besides his parents, Robert is predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth Cassidy Kraus.
A funeral procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT on Saturday June 7, 2014 at 9:30 AM and proceed to St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Pelham Cemetery, City Island, NY. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday June 6, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
