Roger N. Taranto (Big Rog), 74, of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Stamford Hospital. He was born in Stamford on October 12, 1941 to the late Roger P. and Josephine Perella Taranto.
Roger was the owner of Taranto’s Restaurant, Rogerio’s Gift Baskets and Rogerio’s Italian American Deli. He was a life-long parishioner of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, as well as a member of the Democratic City Committee, Board of Representatives, Stamford Sewer Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, UNICO, West Side Guys Club, Minturnese Club of Stamford, and the Stamford Bocci League. Roger was in the US Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis serving on the USS Proteus, the USS Fulton and the USS Hunley.
He is survived by his loving children, Debbie McGrath and her husband Terrance of Stamford, Denise Taranto and Jeffrey Pasiak of Stamford, Roger G. Taranto and his wife Judy Baxter Taranto of Bethel, as well as his brother "his best friend" Ronald Taranto of Stamford, his former wife Ruth Friend Taranto of Stamford. Three grandchildren Daniel McGrath, Danielle Taranto, Joseph Taranto and one great grandson Brayden Taranto. Roger is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins as well as his longtime companion Victoria Sterpu.
Besides his parents, Roger was predeceased by his brother Richard Taranto, his sister-in-law Maureen (Reenie) Taranto and brother-in-law Walter Friend.
Roger was a big man with an even bigger heart. He was a people person who believed in always keeping in touch with all his friends and relatives. He was an elder statesman of an eclectic group of family and friends. He loved his family and friends and would help anyone. Other than his love for and spending time with his family and friends, many of Roger's passions were cooking, especially for the Stamford Columbus Day parade making Zeppole, Pizza Fritte and cooking local Game dinners. He was an active advocate of US Veterans and Disabled Veterans.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his care-givers Rose and Patricia for the loving care and laughter they gave him during his final days.
Family and friends may call at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 1:00-5:00 PM.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 9:40 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart RC Church, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford.
Interment with Military honors will be at a later date.
