Rose M. Cognetta, 94, of Stamford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday November, 27, 2013 with her loving family by her side. Rose was born on October 24, 1919 in New York, NY to the late John and Maria Colavita Sacco.
Rose was the fifth of eight siblings and attended Stamford Public Schools until the tenth grade, after which she took a job at the Pocketbook Factory in Norwalk to help her family. Rose was a lifetime member of the Rosary Society of Sacred Heart Church, an original Auxiliary member of the Italian Center, a Stamford Senior Service line-dancing member, a fashion show model at many local events, an Italian Center Tennis Team player, a card player into her 70’s, and organizer of the St. Camillus Pasta Supper Fundraisers and the unofficial “gown smoother” for family brides.
Rose was ahead of her time and encouraged independent thinking for women before it was fashionable and a cheerleader for family newlyweds. She loved lively discussion and family was her main focus. She taught her family many valuable lessons about love, laughter, acceptance and forgiveness. She was the family spark who also sewed her daughter’s wedding and prom gowns. She was overjoyed and proud at her grandchildren’s graduations and weddings and knitted beautiful monogrammed blankets for her great-grandchildren.
But the best times for Rose were the 52 years she was married to “Mr. Wonderful”, Mike. They lived life simply and to the fullest and loved dancing together, even through some of life’s challenges. While she truly left us over fourteen years ago due Alzheimer’s disease, she left a legacy of how precious each day is and the importance of “giving back” for our blessings. Just before Rose became afflicted with Alzheimer’s, she was a major resource of creating the “Eating Italian Cookbook-With the Sacco/Mercede Family”. It is still being sold in the Stamford Hospital gift shop today and continues to raise funds for Alzheimer’s disease research in Connecticut. Even in death she continues giving back in the hopes of helping others in the future.
Rose is survived by her three daughters; Angel (Jack) Dazzo, Marie (Lino) Tallone, Michele (Joseph) Gallo, five grandchildren, Bill (Lisa) Dazzo, Lauren (Tony) Abate, Julie (Sylvester) Wilson, Erin (Jason) Zinna and Kristen Gallo, and nine great-grandchildren, her sisters, Mrs. Grace Loglisci and Mrs. Frances (Mario) DeCarlo, in-laws, Irene, Joe and Mona Cognetta, Bill and Maryanne Santora, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Rose is predeceased by her loving husband Micheal P. Cognetta, her brothers Anthony and Joseph Sacco, sisters, Mrs. Anna Mercede, Mrs. Lucy Loglisci, Tessie Sacco, son-in-law Jack Dazzo and in-laws, Jeff, Nick, Naida, Cheech and Tilley Cognetta.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart RC Church, 37 Schyuler Avenue, Stamford on Monday December 2, 2013 at 11:00AM. Both calling hours and interment, at St. Johns RC Cemetery, Darien, will be private. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, is honored to assist the Cognetta family with the arrangements.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Rose’s caregivers who they love and couldn’t do without, and to those family and friends who traveled this journey with them, by visiting Rose, even though she didn’t remember them. They will miss her presence and pray for her happiness reuniting with her husband and loving family and friends waiting to enjoy Rose’s spark of life again. Mom, till we meet again, we will always love you.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or to Angels for Alzheimer’s Cure, c/o Angel Dazzo, 255 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Apartment C7, Stamford, CT 06902.
