Russell P. Duncan, of Stamford, died on Friday, February 6, of heart failure. Mr. Duncan was born in Meriden Connecticut in 1917 to Daniel and Ellen Sanderson Duncan. His father was a farmer and an employee of the New Haven gas company for many years.
Mr. Duncan graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven Connecticut, pursued a postgraduate year at Hopkins Grammar School (now Hopkins School) and graduated from Yale University (Sheffield) in 1940. He served in the Navy during WWII, commanding a subchaser off the California coast, and graduated from Yale Law School in 1946.
Mr. Duncan was captain of the 1940 Yale swimming team, and a member of a world record setting 400 yard freestyle relay team in that year. He married Virginia Stanton in 1943 and joined the firm of Pentlarge and Johnson in New York in 1947. He subsequently practiced law with several firms, most recently with Jacobs, Persinger and Parker.
He was a member of the Downtown Association in New York City and the Woodway Country Club of Darien for many years. He was a trustee of the Mianus Gorge Preserve and the Stamford Land Trust, and the first president of the Roxbury Elementary School Parent/Teacher Association in Stamford.
He was a past president of the Stakmore Furniture Company of Owego, New York and a member of the board of directors of Charles Scribners Sons when it was a family-owned company.
Mr. Duncan served as Yale 1940 class Treasurer, Class Secretary and was President of the Association of Yale Alumni for two terms. He was a co-founder of the Stamford Yale Alumni Club and a recipient of the Yale Medal.
His wife, Virginia Stanton Duncan, died in 2007. He is survived by three children; Derreth Duncan of New York City, Edmund, of Denver, Colorado and Daniel, of Norwalk, Connecticut.
Services will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Stamford on Monday, February 16 at 11 oclock, followed by burial at the Roxbury Cemetery in Stamford. A memorial service is planned for New Haven in March.
