Sara L. Herr, 93, a longtime resident of Stamford, died peacefully at home, in her sleep, on June 29, 2021. Sara was born in the small town of Llapo, in Peru, on July 25, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Luis Castro and Lucila Guzman.
As a young woman, Sara left her hometown, for better work opportunities and landed in Lima. There she worked for a family, who, over time, helped her to migrate to America. Sara was hired as a nanny for a family, in Greenwich, CT, and was admitted to the U.S., as an immigrant in June of 1955. Sara always expressed such gratitude for the life changing opportunity she got by coming to the United States. She went on to take care of several children for different families and, also worked as a housekeeper, during most of her later life. Sara was a selfless woman, who always put the needs of others before her own and was instrumental in helping to bring her other siblings over to the U.S. She had a passion for cooking and enjoyed sharing food with family, friends, neighbors and pets. She made friends wherever she went and had an unforgettable, contagious laugh. Sara was married for 49 years and took the most pride in raising her daughter and three amazing grandchildren. Sara was committed to her faith in God and passed along her strong beliefs to her family.
Sara is survived by her loving daughter Yolanda Herr and her husband Michael Cacciotti of Stamford, her brothers John Castro and his wife Johanna of Florida; Frank Castro and his wife Consuelo of Stamford and her sister Lucrecia Castro of Stamford, along with her three beloved grandsons, Gary Benson, III, Dylan Benson and Maximus Cacciotti, all of Stamford. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents Sara is predeceased by her beloved husband Helmut W. Herr, her sisters Galita, Raenah and Lucia Castro, and her two brothers Patrick and Gonzalo Castro.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday morning, July 7, 2021, at the Bethany Church, 2 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford, CT 06903 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM, a funeral service will begin at 12:00 Noon, a procession will follow to St. John's Cemetery, Darien.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Sara's memory to Red Leash Rescue, (www.redleashrescue.com), an adult/senior dog rescue in Fairfield County.
