Sofia Iatrou, 79, a longtime resident of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 14, 2026. Sofia was born in Greece, on June 18, 1947 daughter of the late Theodoros and Ourania Tounousidis.

Sofia immigrated to the United States from Greece after meeting the love of her life, George. The two met, fell in love, and married after just 13 short days, going on to share 52 long and happy years of marriage. Bringing with her a rich heritage and a deep commitment to family, Sofia dedicated her life to creating a warm, vibrant home. She found great joy in her garden, cooking traditional Greek dishes, and baking for those she loved. Above all, Sofia was fiercely devoted to her family; she deeply loved her three children and their spouses, and her happiest moments were spent showering love upon her five cherished grandchildren. She took pride working for Pitney Bowes for over 30 years. Sofia was a devout member of both the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation and the Church of the Archangels. Sofia instilled in her children and grandchildren a deep reverence for God and the Orthodox faith, as well as a love and a sense of pride in the Greek culture. Her warmth, nurturing spirit, and the beautiful traditions she cultivated will leave an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.

Sofia is survived by her 3 children, her daughters, Helen Vlahakis (Chris) and Ourania Pissanidis (Ioannis) and her son John Iatrou (Jennifer) all of Stamford. Sofia is also survived by her 5 cherished grandchildren, Peter, Pauline, Niko, Gia, and George. She is also survived by a brother Nikolaos Tounousidis of Greece along with her sisters-in-law and several beloved nieces and nephews. Besides her parents Sofia was predeceased by her beloved husband George Iatrou, and her brothers Dimitri and Panagioti Tounousidis.

Sofia will be deeply missed and forever live in the hearts of her family, friends, and by all those who knew and loved her. Eternal be her memory.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Ave., Stamford, CT, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien, CT.
