Sylvia Appenzellar Norell, 91, of Stamford passed away peacefully on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Stamford Hospital. She was born in Hamburg, Germany on October 14, 1926 to the late Rudolph and Dory Wotruba Geucke.
The family came to the United States in 1929 and settled in West Englewood, NJ. After graduating from high school Sylvia went to fashion school in New York City, upon completing her education she became a buyer at Lord & Taylor. In 1955 she married David Appenzellar, becoming a homemaker and mother. After David's death in 1964, Sylvia went to work at The Day School a private school in New York City, retiring in 1997 as the Business Manager. Sylvia and her second husband Edward Norell shared a love of skiing, travelling, and spending their summers at the beach in Mattituck, NY.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Christine Appenzellar of Stamford, three nieces, Deborah Bullen (Bill), Terry Appenzellar (John Caldwell), Kate Hancock (Fred), two nephews, David Gerrick and Steve Gerrick (Jeanine), well as two great nieces and one great nephew. Also surviving are her stepchildren, Patricia Sapanski, Robert Norell, James Norell (Amy), and their children and grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her husbands, David Appenzellar, Edward Norell and a brother Ralph Gerrick.
A Memorial Service celebrating Sylvia's life will be held on April 28, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 628 Main Street, Stamford. There will be a luncheon reception following in the church dining room.
