Terrance “Terry” Michael Daily, 78, a lifelong Stamford resident, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026. Terrance was born in Stamford on October 6, 1947 to the late George L. and Catherine O’Grady Daily.
Terry enlisted in the United States Navy after being drafted during the Vietnam War in 1969. He served as a shipfitter stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam; and achieved the rank of Petty Officer Thrid Class. Like many Vietnam veterans, Terry carried the effects of his wartime experiences throughout his life, facing those challenges with resilience, determination and a cold beer.
Following his military service, Terry devoted his career to the railroad industry. He worked at the Cos Cob coal-fired power station throughout the 1970s until its decommissioning in 1986. He then continued his railroad career with Metro-North Railroad, serving as a drawbridge mechanic and later as a foreman until his retirement in 2002. A lifelong mechanic and machinist, Terry spent his retirement doing what he loved most: tinkering with his many garden tractors—affectionately known as "the herd"—brewing beer, and spending time with family, friends, and his beloved dog, DaBug. Terry will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his endless supply of stories and jokes, and the sound of him singing while working in his well-stocked garage. Whether sharing a laugh, telling a story, lending a hand, or working on a project, he left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His quick wit, generous spirit, and unmistakable presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Terrance is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Margaret Heffron Daily; his two daughters, Tara Daily Hibbitts and Dannah Daily; his cherished grandchildren, Logan and Harper Hibbitts; his older brother, George Daily; his twin sister, Patricia Daily Patane; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Terrance was predeceased by his older brother Richard Daily.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT on Monday, June 15, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. A prayer service will be held during the calling hours at 3:30 PM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Terrance’s memory to Disabled American Veteran’s Association; DAV National Headquarters, 860 Dolwick Drive Erlanger, KY 41018 or online at dav.org/ways-to-give.
