Theia Gray Poczabut,93, of Stamford, known affectionately to her friends as “Billy” passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2013. She was born on August 22, 1920 in West Burke, VT to the late Ray and Charlotte McFarland Gray.
Billy was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1938, Lyndon Center, VT, a graduate of the Stamford Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1941 having received her nursing degree and where she met her beloved husband John. Following her graduation she worked for her uncle, Dr. Frederick McFarland as his nurse in his OBGYN practice in Stamford.
Billy was a member and past president of the Garden Club of Glenbrook. She was also a member of St. Joseph’s Auxiliary and volunteered with the Red Cross. Billy was a parishioner of St. Leo’s Parish and served on the Rosary Altar Society for many years. She will be remembered for her great love of animals and the support she gave to the many animal organizations.
Billy was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Dr. John S. Poczabut, her sisters, Leah Wells and Frieda B. Gray. She is survived by her three loving children, Robert Poczabut and his wife Donna of Burlington, VT, Charlotte Kane and her husband Joseph of Stamford and Mary Poczabut of Stamford. Also surviving are her five grandchildren, Katelin Poczabut of Burlington, VT, Capt. Bryan Kane of Colorado Springs, CO, Sara Paolini and her husband Gregg of Norwalk, John Kane and his wife Nicole of Norwalk and Kara Poczabut of Stamford. She also leaves behind her three great grandchildren, who are triplets, Abigail, Emily and Ian Kane of Colorado Springs, CO and her beloved cat Buddy.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Shawnea Nelson-Adams, her caregiver and companion during her last year of life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 11:30 AM at St Leo’s Parish 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford . Interment will be private. There will be no calling hours. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 is honored to assist the Poczabut family with the arrangements.
