Theodoros Athanasoulias, 75, of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Norwalk Hospital. He was born in Platana, Sparta, Greece on May 22, 1939 to the late John and Yiannoula Stratigakis Athanasoulias.
Theodoros was employed at Excelsior Hardware of Stamford for twenty years before starting his own restaurant, Village Pizza of Madison, CT with his brother and partner Efstratios until his retirement in 2007. He served as a Lieutenant in the Greek Army. Theodoros was one of the founders of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, and was active in the Church, having served for many years on the Parish council and as a teacher of the Greek Language. He was a member of the Panhellenic Athletic Club. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who always put his family first.
He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Libby Screpetis Athanasoulias, his loving children Jenny Bachman and her husband Kurt, John Athanasoulias and his wife Connie, his brother Efstratios Athanasoulias and his wife Venetia all of Stamford and his sister Maria Tzanetakis of Greece, as well as his adored grandchildren Olivia Bachman, Sarah and Chloe Athanasoulias. Many nieces and nephews also surviving.
Besides his parents, Theodoros was predeceased by his brother Ilias Athanasoulias.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford at 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 21, 2015 for a funeral service to be celebrated at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Avenue, Stamford at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park, Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 PM, with a Trisagian service to be held at 7:00 PM.
