Umberto “Al” Lorenti, 81, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. He was born on January 1, 1932 in Stamford to the late Joseph and Sylvia Sylvestri Lorenti.
Al was a graduate of Stamford High School, Class of 1951 and a graduate of Bullard-Havens Technical School. He served in the U.S Army where he was stationed in Germany. Al was a phenomenal ballroom dancer and instructor for Bill DeFamato and danced in the Harvest Moon Ball at Madison Square Garden and won the Viennese Waltz contest.
Al was a carpenter by trade for over sixty years and was a member of the Carpenters Local #210, a member of the K of C, Council 41, 3rd Degree. He was an avid golfer and a founding member of St. Leo’s Parish Bowling League, a member of St. Leo’s Parish since 1961 and was a Sunday usher at the 8 AM Mass and served as a volunteer at their annual fair for the past thirty three years and Captain for many years for the “Christmas in April “ Program.
He loved spending winters with his wife in Naples, Fl enjoying their home and playing bocce as well as being a lead referee. He also enjoyed his yearly vacation in Newport, RI for over twenty five years. Al loved spending every Holiday and special occasion with his family and had a wonderful personality and a positive attitude and was known by everyone as “Big Al”. He rarely missed an athletic event, ice hockey, softball, field hockey, lacrosse, figure skating, baseball games and dance recitals that any of his grandchildren participated in.
Al is survived by his devoted wife of fifty five years Marie Lombardo Lorenti of Stamford, his loving children Marc A. Lorenti and his wife Mildred , Stacey A. Sass and her husband John all of Stamford, his loving grandchildren Marc and Nicole Lorenti, Lauren and Tricia Sass and his sister Elizabeth Wolf of Stamford. Many nieces and nephews also surviving.
Besides his parents, Al was predeceased by his brothers John and Joseph Lorenti and his sisters Yolanda Janicki and Sylvia Rodriguez.
A funeral procession will be leaving The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 9:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Leo’s Parish, 24 Roxbury Road Stamford. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace RC Cemetery, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 12:00-4:00 PM.
