Valerie Kennedy Mcdermott
April 12, 1940 — November 15, 2008
Valerie Kennedy McDermott, originally of Brooklyn, NY, Washingtonville, NY and, most recently, Darien, CT, died surrounded by her loved ones at the Richard L Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford, CT on November 15, 2008 after a brief battle with melanoma. She was 68.
Valerie grew up in Brooklyn, NY, where she graduated from St. Michaels High School and married her high school sweetheart, Owen McDermott. After working to assist her husband and family with their educations and raising two sons, Valerie returned to school herself, graduating from Ramapo College, with Summa Cum Laude honors, in 1980.
Her 25+ year career as a Quality Engineer and ISO 2000 Certified Auditor in the consumer cosmetics industry included positions at Estee Lauder and, most recently, Elizabeth Arden of Stamford, CT, from which she retired in 2007. For the last several years, Valerie lived with her son Kenneth and his family in Darien, CT, enjoying life as a loving mother, sister and beloved grandmother, very active in the lives of her grandchildren. Throughout her life and especially near the end, Valerie was a role model and inspiration for her family, friends and all who knew her, maintaining a loving, positive spirit without regard to the circumstances.
Valerie is survived by her two sons, Terry and Kenneth. Terry and his wife, Kathy, and their two sons, Jason and Drew, live in Evanston, IL. Kenneth and his wife, Brenda, and their children, Kerry and Jack, are residents of Darien, CT. Valerie is also survived by her two brothers, Richard Kennedy of Portsmouth, RI and Robert Kennedy of Palos Verdes, CA.
A memorial service will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT, at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 6, 2008. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations in memory of Valerie McDermott be made to the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence, 30 Shelburne Street, Stamford, CT, 06902.
