Vasiliki Thomas, a long time Stamford resident and cherished member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, passed away due to complications arising from dementia/Alzheimer’s disease and various other physical issues. She was 94 years old at the time of her passing.
Vasiliki began her journey in the town of Gythion, near Sparta in Greece. Her mother, Anastasia Lekas, passed away when she was 11 years old forcing her to become a surrogate mother for her three sisters and two brothers. Later, she emigrated to the United States, and lived in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, where she met her husband of nearly 60 years, Emanuel Thomas. She then moved to Stamford in 1963, where she became a member of the Church of the Archangels.
Vasiliki was not only a hard-working mother and homemaker, but was also a tireless worker and contributor to the Archangels church’s Ladies Philoptochos Group. No job or volunteer work in that group was considered unimportant, as she contributed baking, cleaning and other key responsibilities at various important church events. For her efforts, she was awarded a 50 Years of Service certificate by the National Ladies Philoptochos Society.
Apart from her contributions to the church, Vasiliki made her two Stamford homes, 91 Halpin Ave and 348 Club Road special places for family and friends alike. Because of her second to none cooking and baking skills, her home was filled with wonderful aromas that left lasting memories for those privileged enough to enjoy the food she prepared. She treated everyone as if they were her aunt, cousin, sister and grandmother.
Vasiliki is survived by her son Anastasios "Stos" Thomas; granddaughter Salma; two sisters, Maria Lekas of Ft Lee, NJ and Joanne Serlis of Stony Brook NY; her brother Michael Lekas of Morristown NJ; sister in law Rosemary Lekas of Morristown NJ; brothers in law, Michael Serlis of Stony Brook NY and Peter Moliviatis of Norwalk CT; and various cousins, nieces and nephews. Vasiliki is predeceased by her husband of nearly 60 years Emanuel Thomas in 2011, and youngest son John Thomas in 2008.
