Wendell L. Bishop, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Old Greenwich, on September 24, 2008. He was born in New Canaan to Stephen Bishop and Mary Weed, but was raised and attended school in Stamford.
A World War II veteran of U.S. Army Tank Destroyer Battalions 899 and 805, Mr. Bishop served in North Africa, Italy and Austria and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart during the course of his four years in service.
Upon his return from the war, he established the Wendell L. Bishop Agency, selling real estate and insurance for many years. He served two terms as President of the Stamford Board of Realtors. Later in life, he enjoyed a second career as a real estate appraiser.
Mr. Bishop had a great love of travel. He, his wife and children traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico in their beloved Airstream trailer. They also enjoyed many trips to Europe as well as five trips around the world on their favorite ship, the QE2. He loved gardening, skiing, camping, hiking and sailing and was a member of the Circumnavigators Club and the Old Greenwich Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Faith Mead Bishop, a son, Stephen L. Bishop, a daughter, Mary B. Kingery, a granddaughter, Sophy Mead Bishop, daughter-in-law, Barbara Rose Bishop and son-in-law, Jay Kingery.
He was pre-deceased by his brother, Hugh Bishop, and sisters, Adelaide Jorgensen, Margaret Williams and Jeannette Kirk.
