WILLIAM DICK, 78, of Greenwich, passed away on Monday morning at the Rosenthal Hospice Center in Stamford, Connecticut.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he was the elder son of Estelle Brown and William Dick, he was descended on his Mother’s side from the family of Hans Hansen Bergen, one of the original European settlers of the Colony of New Amsterdam.
Bill earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Classics from Columbia University in 1953 and a Master’s from Oxford University in 1956,which he attended as a Kellett Fellow. After teaching for three years in New Hampshire, he taught Latin at the Brunswick School in Greenwich from 1960 to 1999. In addition to teaching Latin he was Dean of Coordination for Brunswick and the Greenwich Academy and developed the system which allows students in the High School sections of both schools to enroll in classes at either campus.
After retiring from Brunswick in 1999 he taught classes in Poetry Appreciation and Shakespeare at the Lifetime Learners program at Norwalk Community College.
Bill was an avid student of ancient history and languages and was fluent in several. For many years he wrote poetry, some of which has been published in anthologies and text books.
A convinced Quaker, he was for Clerk of the Stamford- Greenwich Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.
He is survived by his wife, Esmé , Sons Peter and Paul and grandchildren, Connor, Kelsey and Stephen also, his brother John and sister in law Mary Beth of Port Chester and eight nieces and nephews and 10 Great Nieces and 8 Great nephews.
There will be a meeting for Memorial after the manner of Friends at the Stamford-Greenwich Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), at the corner of Roxbury and Westover Roads in Stamford at 11am on Saturday, November 21st.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that any donations be made to the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross, 99 Indian Field Rd. Greenwich or ABLIS at 50 Glenville Street, Greenwich.
