Winthrop Rowley “Bim” Collins, 86, a fifty-nine year resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on May 4, 2014 at Stamford Hospital with his loving family by his side. Winthrop was born in Syracuse, NY on March 23, 1928 to the late Oscar Ernest and Faye Rowley Collins.
Winthrop graduated from Fitchburg High School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1946. He immediately entered the service, serving as a Staff Sargent in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1949. He then attended the University of Rhode Island utilizing the GI bill, and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
Winthrop worked for Pitney Bowes of Stamford for thirty-five years as a Tax Manager, retiring in 1990, and also served as volunteer Treasurer of the Pitney Bowes Golden Oldies Retiree Club. He was a volunteer at numerous organizations, coaching his daughter in the Miss Softball America program and the Young Timers of Stamford Basketball League. He also volunteered for many years in church programs and at the Tandet Senior Center. Additionally he was an avid Red Sox fan.
Winthrop is survived by his loving wife Catherine Evanchik Collins of Stamford, his daughters, Deborah Collins and her husband Louis Silverman of California, Janice Collins and her husband James Immerman of Massachusetts, his grandchildren, Sara and Sam Silverman and David, Kevin and Michael Immerman. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Lombardi and her husband Raymond as well as his cousin Richard Collins and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 42 Cross Road, Stamford on Saturday May 31, 2014 at 11:00AM. There will be no calling hours and interment will be private. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT is honored to assist the Collins family with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Winthrop’s memory to either the First United Methodist Church, 42 Cross Road, Stamford, CT or St. Mary’s Holy Assumption Russian Orthodox Church, 141 Den Road, Stamford, CT.
