Periklis Kounavelis, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 25, 2021 at Stamford Hospital. He was born on March 15, 1937 in Skoura, Sparta, Greece, and was one of six children born to the late Nikitas and Constantina (Thomakos) Kounavelis. Periklis was 84 years old at the time of his passing.
Periklis met and married his childhood sweetheart Katero in Skoura in 1961. Periklis and Katero started their life in Greece and raised their two sons, Nikitas and Peter, there. In 1966, they moved to Schenectday, NY to be near Periklis’ family who had previously immigrated to the US. In 1967, Periklis and his family moved to Stamford, CT where he began working as a factory laborer at FIG. After 10 years, Periklis started working at Pepperidge Farms as a baker eventually retiring after 18 years of service.
Periklis is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Katherine Kounavelis (Vouthounis); his son and daughter-in-law Nikitas and Pauline Kounavelis; grandson Periklis James “PJ”; a brother-in-law Zoi Vouthounis and his wife Georgia, a sister-in-law Rena Counavelis, and several beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Periklis was predeceased by his son Peter Kounavelis in 2004; his siblings Petros Kounavelis, Maria Contompasis, Konstantinos Kounavelis, John Counavelis and Frederica Chakas; brother-in-law Konstantinos Vouthounis; and sister-in-law Chrisoula Vouthounis.
Family and friends may call at the Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford, CT 06905 on Thursday morning, December 30th from 10 AM – 11 AM, with the funeral service to begin at 11:00 AM. The interment will immediately follow at Woodland Cemetery in Stamford.
