Joseph Kung

Joseph M.C. Kung (“Joe”), the Kung family stalwart and an ardent advocate for the persecuted underground Roman Catholic Church in China, passed away in the early morning hours of February 14, 2023. He was one month shy of his 91st birthday.

Born in Shanghai, China to a distinguished 6th generation Catholic family, he was the second of eight children of Dr. Vincent Kung, a surgeon, and Theresa Yao, a homemaker.

He lived a life of faith, courage, and principle. Always taking the long view, he fought for what was right and just for both his family and so many others.

At 18 years old in 1950 soon after the Communist took over China, he left Shanghai to be reunited with his father who had fled to Hong Kong months earlier. As the border closed soon after, he could not see his siblings and his mother again for almost 30 years. His father died two years later, leaving him penniless and alone. Joe’s family remains forever grateful to Shanghainese family friends who assisted Joe during this time.

Joe is a proud beneficiary of the Refugee Relief Act of 1953. As a recipient of one of 2,000 visas granted to Chinese refugees, he relocated in 1955 to Ohio and enrolled at John Carroll University. He worked full time throughout his entire four years to put himself through school, graduating in 1959. He continued his education culminating with 2 MBAs – one each from (Case) Western Reserve University and Wayne State University. He was a CPA by trade.

Eventually, he returned to Hong Kong where he married his future wife, Agnes, in 1968. They were blessed with the birth of his four surviving children. A lifelong fervent American patriot, Joe is forever grateful to the United States for his many opportunities including the relocation of his young family to Stamford, CT in 1979 to the home that he lived in for the remainder of his life.

Aside from his four children, Joe is most proud of three accomplishments. First, the joy of facilitating the immigration of his mother and six siblings along with their immediate families to the United States. Seeing them happily retired and the next generation blossoming in the land of freedom was one of his greatest joys.

Second, keeping alive the memory of then Bishop (now Cardinal) Kung and successfully fighting for his release in 1987 after 32 years of incarceration in China for his religious beliefs and leadership.

Third, establishing in 1992 the Cardinal Kung Foundation not only to promote the persecuted Roman Catholic Church in China, but also to champion the cause for Cardinal Kung’s canonization. Joe Kung testified to Congress on multiple occasions, convinced 54 members of Congress to sign a letter to China’s Premier pleading for Cardinal Kung’s release, served as an expert witness to gain asylum for over 30 individuals or families of verified persecuted underground Catholics, and supported hundreds of underground clergy and nuns in renowned European seminaries and universities. His dedication, supported by his Board of Directors, resulted in both awards and condemnation including the Cardinal Mindszenty Award and being named as the biggest enemy of the Chinese government approved Patriotic Association catholic church by one director of a major religious community.

Joe was also a hobbyist inventor, a founder of two companies, a lifelong lover of classical music, a connoisseur of sweets, and above all, a loving dedicated family man.

Joe was predeceased by his older sister Ming Zhu, his beloved parents Dr. Vincent Kung and Theresa Yao Kung, as well as his cherished uncle Ignatius Cardinal Kung. He is survived by his wife of 54 years (Agnes), four children and their spouses (Terese Kung & Tom Scally, John Kung, Francis Kung & Colleen Sharkey-Kung, and Mary Kung), and granddaughter Thea Kung; six siblings and their spouses (Min Sun & Hong Qi Kung, Margaret & Ignatius Chu, Michael and Amy Kung, Peter & Mary Kung, Margaret and David Pang, Martha Ming Kung & John C. Hung); nine nephews and nieces and their spouses, and eight grand nephews and nieces.

Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 4:30-7:00 PM (with eulogy at 5:30pm). Georgia Saltis

Georgia Saltis, a former Stamford resident, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2023.

Georgia was born in Greece on August 29, 1929, to the late Costas and Eva (nee Ganos) Drallios. She came to the United States in 1931and settled in Bronx, NY.

As a young woman in her 20’s, she had a very exciting life working in Manhattan for ASCAP Records and at the Waldorf Astoria and enjoying city life until she met her husband Michael Saltis at a Greek wedding. They settled in Stamford, CT. where she raised her two loving daughters. Upon retirement, they headed out west and lived in Prescott, Arizona and then Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and eventually coming back and settling in the Bronx.

Georgia enjoyed life to the fullest. While working full time, she was a doting wife and mother, a devout Christian and very active in the Church of the Archangels Greek Orthodox Church in Stamford, CT. She found much pleasure in reading broadly and in sharing books with her daughters. She enjoyed the beach, tennis, theater, traveling with her family, cooking (she was the best cook), and an avid Yankees fan since she was a young girl living in the Bronx, often attending games with her girlfriends her cuffed jeans bobby sox and saddle shoes.

She loved her family beyond words and absolutely adored her grandson Trevor, who was simply the apple of her eye. The joy he gave her was immeasurable.

She was the most patient, most selfless, gentle soul on earth. She gave everything and never expected anything in return. She made everyone she met feel special and her heart was so much bigger than her tiny frame.

She filled our home with light and love, song and music and books. Thank you, Mom, you were our example for everything, our guidepost to living a fulfilling and enriched cultural life.

The angels are lucky now Mom, they will learn a lot from you.
Sweet Dreams, Mom, say hi to Dad for us and I hope you two are finally dancing again together to Frank Sinatra…..the Best is Yet to Come……

Georgia is survived by her two loving daughters, Madeline Russo and Ava Saltis and her cherished grandson, Trevor Russo. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Saltis in 2017.

Betty Murphy

Betty A. Murphy, 93, a former resident of Stamford, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Notre Dame Convalescent Home of Norwalk. She was born in New York City on June 18, 1929 to the late Gilbert and Madeline Giuliano Rossillo. In addition to her parents, Betty was also predeceased by her husband, Philip Murphy, Jr., in 2013 and her sister, Amy Burt, in 2011.

Ever soft in voice and short in stature, Betty lived with a heart of immeasurable care and compassion for those she loved. A graduate of Stamford High School, Betty worked for Pitney Bowes where she met and then married her husband of 57 years. She helped raise five children, the matriarch of a large loving family that came to know Raymond Street, her home, as a place of gathering, of comfort, and of the soft, sweater-clad, open arms she held to all. She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and very dedicated to her faith. Her relationship with Christ was reflected in the care she showed her family and her life was a true example of faith-lead service, love, and devotion.

Betty enjoyed walking at Cove Island, lunches at Cummings Park, building puzzles, and watching the Yankees. What gave her the most joy was spending time with her family. She would gladly watch whatever kids tv shows her grandchildren were excited to share with her when visiting, and they loved her secret stash of candy that seemed like it would never go empty. She had a warmth and patience to her that made spending time with her feel like time spent in sunshine. A smile on her face was guaranteed at holidays and family gatherings, especially with her grandchildren and great grandchild. In a family whose crowded group photos sometimes resembled more of a football team, she was always at the center; the embodiment of that patient and compassionate love for which she will always be remembered.

Betty is survived by her loving children, Philip Murphy III and his wife Kristin of Norwalk, Elizabeth Heiman and her husband Dwight of Needham, MA, Rev. Richard Murphy of Greenwich, Rosemary McDonald and her husband Patrick of Newtown, Margaret Fraioli and her husband Marc of Stamford, as well as eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023 a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Monday, February 13, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Betty’s memory to Notre Dame Convalescent Home, 76 W. Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT 06851.
