Carmela Abbazia

Carmela “Milly” Angelina Abbazia, 97, of Shelton and a former resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2022. She was born on August 5, 1925 to the late Patsy and Frances Merlino Cristofolo.
Carmela was a graduate of Stamford High School, Class of 1943. She worked for Sears for over 32 years, Carmela was also a member of the Women’s Club of Stamford, St. Gabriel’s Senior Group, National Council of Senior Citizens, as well as St. Mary’s Rosary Society and served as a volunteer at St. Camillus Nursing Home. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and baking.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Angel Pia of Wilmington, NC, three great granddaughters, Frances, Jessica and Liliana Pia, as well as her sister, Jennie Clark and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Carmela was predeceased by her longtime partner Nicholas Ciaccia, her two daughters, Gerrilynn Abbazia and Frances Estes, her sisters, Rose Perrillo, Palmina Zaremski, Antoinette Palmieri, as well as a granddaughter, Glory Lynn Estes and son in law, Peter Pia.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford at 9:30 AM, Monday, October 3, 2022 for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford. Entombment will follow at St. John’s Mausoleum, Norwalk. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, October 2, 2022 from 2:00-5:00 PM.
