Evangelos Bakes

Evangelos Bakes, a longtime resident of Stamford, CT, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and deeply loyal friend, passed away at his home after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer on the evening of Tuesday, May 2, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Athens, Greece on June 19, 1948 to the late Dimitrios and Georgia (Glekas) Bakes. Evangelos was 74 years old at the time of his passing.
Evangelos was born and raised in Athens, Greece. After completing his military service in Greece, he immigrated to Stamford, CT in 1970, where met the love of his life, Olga, and started his family. He was a skilled tool and die maker by trade, owning and operating his own shop, J&S Precision Company, in the 80’s. He eventually retired from the trade in 2015 while working for the Norwalk Compressor Company. Being extremely proud of his heritage, Evangelos was a very active member within the Greek Community. He was a lifelong member of the Pellana Society and Panhellenic Athletic Club, serving time as president for both organizations. He was also a passionate soccer fan and a devoted lifelong fan of A.E.K. Athens F.C. But above all else, Evangelos loved spending time with his family – especially his beloved grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Olga (Prois) Bakes; his son, Dimitrios Bakes and wife Robyn of Shelton, CT; daughter Yianna Bakes Dimitroglou and husband Savva of Stamford; siblings, Irene Lagogiannis and husband Stefanos of Athens, Greece and Konstantinos Bakes of Florida; his grandchildren, Evangelos, Eva, Daphne and Miltiadis; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family both in America and Greece. Evangelos will be sorely missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Visitation will take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905 on Friday, May 5th from 10AM to 11AM, with a funeral service starting promptly at 11AM. The interment will follow the service at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford. Father Evan Evangelidis will be presiding over the services.

Vasilios Tiniakos

Vasilios G. Tiniakos, 77, of Southington, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2023. Vasilios was born in Greece on April 15, 1946 to the late Giannoulis Tiniakos and Margarita Kalogredis Tiniakos.
He came to America to pursue his education and returned to Greece where he married and had two children before returning to America in 1983. Vasilios was an avid reader and enjoyed philosophy, mathematics, painting and playing the guitar. He was a gracious and loving person with unconditional love for his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Vasilios is survived by his loving wife Moscha Sarris Tiniakos, his son John Tiniakos and his wife Georgia, his son-in-law Demetrios Tsaparas and his four grandchildren; John, Alexander, Vasiliki and Anastasia.
Besides his parents, Vasilios is predeceased by his loving daughter Katerina Tsaparas.

John Lionetti

Ralph Sparan, Jr.

Ralph Sparan, Jr., 96, of Old Greenwich, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Stamford on November 30, 1926, to the late Ralph and Agnes Hogan Sparan.
Ralph was a former Stamford and longtime Greenwich resident. He proudly served during WWII in the US Army. Ralph was an avid sportsman, former employee of United House Wrecking, and a loving father and grandfather.
Ralph is survived by his loving children, Peter Sparan and his wife Molly of Norwalk, Ralph R. Sparan and his wife Michele of Stamford, as well as his brother, Thomas Sparan of Stamford. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren, Catherine Cuthbertson and her husband Dave, Marianne and Adrianna Sparan and a great granddaughter, Samantha Cuthbertson.
Besides his parents, Ralph was also predeceased by his beloved wife Gloria Prizio Sparan, and his brothers Robert and Edward Sparan.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Monday, May 1, 2023, at 9:20AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church , 4 Riverside Avenue, Riverside at 10:00AM. Josephine Battinelli

Josephine Etta Goff Saul Battinelli passed away April 25, 2023 at the age of 92. She is survived by her loving daughter Linda Battinelli-Colucci and her husband Salvatore as well as two granddaughters, Jennifer Colucci-Althoff (Ryan) of Atlanta, GA and Kimberly Colucci of Las Vegas, NV. She was also thrilled and very proud to become a great-grandmother to Franco Dominic Althoff. She was known as Granny to JoAnn Genovese-Julbes (Gus) and son, Anthony. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Gloria Battinelli and Catherine Battinelli and many nieces and nephews whom she loved, as well as her special Westy, Vito.
In addition to her parents Minnie Josephine Taylor Goff, Harry Goff and stepfather Joseph Bovino, she was predeceased by her husband Ralph A. Battinelli who died in 2006 after 56 years of marriage, as well as an infant son Ralph Jr. and an infant daughter, Catherine; sisters Dorothy Trowbridge (Ed), Frances Moriarty (Jim), infant sister Harriet and stepsister Nancy Bovino Stoni (Daniel); Also predeceased by Ursula Battinelli Rich (Alphonse), Carl Battinelli (Helen), Ann Battinelli Zaccagnino (William), Rita Battinelli Murphy (Robert), Pasquale Battinelli and Louis Battinelli.
She was born on a farm in Florence Township, NJ in 1930, where she and her mom and sisters raised vegetables that they sold to the Campbell Soup Company and flowers marketed to local florists. She moved to Stamford in 1940, attending Stamford schools. During her teen years, she volunteered as a candy striper at Stamford Hospital. And later at a dry cleaner, where she met the love of her life, Ralph Battinelli. They went to her senior prom together and never left each others side after that. She worked for Homequity-Peterson Howell and Heather in Wilton, CT, rising to the position of Manager of their Equity Computation Department, handling equity closings for properties in all 52 states. She was a member of the National Accountants Association and served on their Board of Directors. She was an active member of the American Management Association and served as guest speaker in numerous seminars across the country. While living in Stratford, CT she served on the National Historical Committee for several years. She worked for 20 years for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company as Vice President of Finance.

Rose Migliazza

Rose Pirio Migliazza, longtime residence of Stamford, CT, and beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away at her home with her loving family at her side. She was born in Girifalco, Catanzaro, Italy on January 29, 1928, and was one of four children born to the late Domenico and Paola Migliazza (Signorelli). Rose was 95 years old at the time of her passing.

Rose was the Classic Italian Mom who loved her family, friends and neighbors and they loved her too. She loved to cook and didn’t ever want to hear your stomach growling from being hungry. Rose didn’t want to talk about politics, sports, or TV – she just wanted to know what you wanted to eat! She was a tireless worker who worked many jobs to support her family, and sometimes many jobs at the same time! She was as a seamstress with Lord and Taylor for almost 20 years and was a favorite there among the employees and customers.

Rose was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Migliazza, in 2006 and is survived by her two sons, Robert Migliazza and wife Donna of Stamford, CT and John Migliazza and wife Susan of Monroe, CT; her grandchildren who she adored, Michelle Hylton and husband Alex with great granddaughter, Ella Rose, of Norwalk, CT, Bobby Migliazza and wife Kate with great grandson, Luca Ryan, of Stamford, CT, Cathy Migliazza and fiancé Richard Gaffney of Naugatuck, CT, and Johnny Migliazza III of Monroe, CT. She also leaves behind her sisters, Mary Spagnuolo of Stamford and Patricia Manna and husband Silvio of Norwalk, CT, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Rose was predeceased by her brother, Salvatore Pirio, and brother-in-law, Mario Spagnuolo.

Rose was a major part of her family, and while it will take a long, long time to get used to her not being with us anymore, we celebrate her long life of love and family. She will be missed by all those who loved her, and her memory will live on in their hearts forever.

At her family’s request all services for Rose will be held privately.

Michele Tartaglia-May

Michele Tartaglia-May, a lifelong Stamford resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 14th, 2023. Michele was born in Stamford on July 7th, 1975, to parents CarolAnn and David Tartaglia.

In addition to her parents, Michele is survived by her husband, James May, of Lindenhurst, New York, sister and brother-in-law: Samantha and Gad Lavy, her niece Victoria Crowe, as well as many cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is predeceased by her grandmother, Theresa Palomeni Gurtlinger.

Michele was a warm, loving person who enjoyed being with her family and, most of all, her faithful dog Gina. She is a graduate of Stamford High School and Southern Connecticut University, where she then pursued a short career in daytime television. A lover of music, flowers, and all the beautiful things in life, “Mimi” will always be remembered for her benevolent and nurturing spirit.

The family is hosting a small service on Saturday, April 22nd, at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien, CT, at 10:00 AM; there will not be calling hours.

Elizabeth Korfman

Elizabeth (Betty) Korfman, 94, born on August 4, 1928 to Emma and John Baker of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2023 in her residence at Wilton Meadows. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, the late Walter Korfman, a life-long resident of Stamford. Betty proudly received her degree from Charlottetown Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1950. She then moved to the United States and started her career as an RN at United Hospital in Portchester, NY, followed by St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stamford. During this time, Betty met her future husband Walter and they married in 1953. They made their home in North Stamford where they happily raised three daughters. Betty was a truly devoted wife, mother and grandmother, with a great sense of humor. She was kind and enthusiastic, often donating her time to community service, namely, Meals on Wheels. She loved swimming, gardening, family barbeques, beach outings and lobster rolls, while rarely missing a NY Mets game. In the spring and fall we frequented the Stamford Nature Center and Stamford Arboretum, hence her love for animals, birds and the outdoors. Vacationing in Canada to spend time with her family was always a wonderful time for all. Betty continued nursing and offered companionship, for those in need of private duty care, in her free time. She was passionate about celebrating holiday traditions and making festive meals; she will be greatly missed by all during these special times. Betty was especially fond and proud of her seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Betty is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Barbara and Jeff Erdmann of Norwalk, Linda and Bennett Sheppard, of West Hartford, Joan Carruthers and Paul Nebor, of Falls Village; as well as her grandchildren, Thomas, Charlie and Will Erdmann, Samantha and Bradley Sheppard; Ryan Vesciglio, Julianne and Matt Irvine, and one great-granddaughter, Delaney Irvine. Betty endured a gradual, long progression of Parkinson’s Disease in her later years, yet remained remarkably kind, strong and grateful to her loving family and caregivers. As a family, we would like to express a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Wilton Meadows Healthcare and Ridgefield’s Visiting Nurse Association. John Loglisci

John Loglisci, a lifelong resident of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully at his home on Easter morning, April 9, 2023, with his beloved family by his side. Born in 1935 on the Fourth of July, the son of the late Louis and Lucy Sacco Loglisci. John was 87 years old at the time of his passing after successfully living with cancer for nine-years.
After graduating JM Wright Technical School in Stamford, learning the auto mechanic trade, he briefly worked at an auto shop prior to his obligatory 2-year service in the US Army, stationed in Denver, CO. Called back to Stamford to join the family restaurant business in 1958 he started as a short order cook at the Tastee Freez, later becoming Lucy’s, and finally the iconic JR’s Restaurant and nightclub in the ‘70s. Booking gigs for NY Jazz musicians, and hosting Hollywood celebrities was one of John’s roles and his love of music and singing grew from there. Bartending, catering events and managing the food service at the Stamford Boat Shows were roles he enjoyed. After JR’s closed in 1988, John continued his restaurant career as a consultant, manager and maître d’ at several establishments, including the Italian Center.
John was survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 57 years, Marilynn Manzke Loglisci, their two children, Karin Loglisci and John Loglisci, his wife Cassandra Ellis along with three grandchildren — Bianca (21), Lu (16) and Lydia (16); his siblings, Ralph Loglisci, Annette Cortese and husband Vinny, Anthony Loglisci and wife Carol; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends who John treasured.
John was happiest when cooking his signature dish, lasagna, and he loved to sing Sinatra songs! Throughout he had many singing performances at the restaurant, around town, parties and social events. He loved spending time with family and friends; always out and about, incredibly social, fun, filled with laughter and loved by many. He was truly the “Man about Town.”

Christina Keane

Christina A. “Justy” Keane, 87, formerly of Stamford, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2023 in Goodyear, Arizona. Christina was born in Stamford on September 30, 1935 to the late John J. and Isabel Genovese Carlo.
Justy, as known by close friends and family throughout her life, graduated Stamford High School in 1953 and then pursued a degree in business administration from UCONN graduating in 1957. She then worked for several years as an accountant for J. Michael Cantore, Certified Public Accountants on Bedford Street. Having married her first husband Arthur “Buddy” Gallup, she raised her two boys until they completed school. Later in life she worked for the Greenwich Education Association. Justy was an active parishioner of North Stamford Congregational Church with her second husband Robert.
Justy is survived by her two sons; Jon Gallup, of Stamford and Robert C. Gallup of New Canaan; her two grandchildren, Kristi L. Gallup, of Philadelphia and Casey S. Gallup of Brooklyn, New York; a stepson, Kevin Keane of Washington, DC; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Heyman of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Marianne Keane of Canaan, Connecticut as well as her sister Gail Davidson, of Goodyear, Arizona and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Amber and Alanna Hallaway of Phoenix, Arizona for the loving care provided to Justy in her final years.
